We All Have Masks
|
I brainstormed for this concept by thinking about items that were common objects, but were unique in their own way. Then I thought of these masks that we got at a goodwill, that were really cool and yet challenging. Then I put a quill and some ink and more quills because it just seemed more along the lines of the common object. I chose this idea because I love masks and writing with a quill, it just makes me think about Commedia dell'Arte which is a type of improv that revolved around a person's mask. I also chose it because I really wanted to challenge myself with the music notes which was a huge challenge. The artistic challenges I encountered was to try and find a small enough brush for the music notes, color matching the masks, and doing the feathers because when I would add one color, then it was just too much and there wasn't a balance.
My artistic process was to focus on one mask first, then put in the background color, and then work on the other parts and pieces. It didn't work out too well in my favor, it took a long time and lots of concentration on the one mask which made me lose sight of the other objects that still needed to be painted. The challenges were like I stated before the feathers and the music notes. It was also challenging to do the ink bottle and the cup holding the other feathers, because the paint I was using was very translucent, so I would had to put down layers of paint which took a lot of time. The successes I think were the masks themselves, even though they're not exactly the most realistic that they could have been I'm still very proud of them, and also my color matching and blending, that was hard, but it turned out really great. What I've overall learned is that I cannot focus on one particular part of a painting, I need to work on the full picture and then go in with details. I also learned what it meant by a paint being translucent and not, because it was very frustrating to put layer upon layer of paint and wait for it to dry. I also learned that challenging yourself is something that is hard to do, but the reward of it is a beautiful painting that you're proud of. I definitely feel like I grew in my knowledge of acrylic paint, that you need a lot of patience when working with it, and also to manage time, and list out what you need to do in order to get the task done. I also learned how dry brushing really helps especially with shadowing, because it just gives the right quality and looks really nice. I also grew tremendously as an artist, by learning more about acrylic paints, the use of the different sizes of brushes, and how white paint really comes in handy. So I will really use those new learned skills in my next painting. |
