There are many ways people define art. Some seem more reasonable than others, but it really matters how you define art yourself, not because someone else has defined it for you.
Art can be defined as a kind of communication, to let people understand what your thinking or why you did something the way you did. I want to tell a story to my viewers when they look at my art, tell them the beginning, middle, and end of my pieces. I want them to look at a piece that inspires them to make their own art and tell their own story.
Then there's the part on how you want others to view you as an artist. I want others to see me not only as an artist, but someone who's put their imagination on a canvas, someone who thinks way outside the box, that's how I want to view me as an artist.
Ideas that you think of in art can be a big help, but the biggest help is to have the drive to do it. That feeling of wanting to draw for hours. The artistic ideas that drive me to create are the ones that challenge me. Before I started any art classes here in North Carolina I would do just simple drawings, in nothing but graphite pencil, and the subjects were the things in my life that I enjoy. I love anime, so I started drawing anime characters cause they were easy, then I moved onto an even bigger task which was drawing movie characters or actors. The challenge made me want to do more, each shape was harder to get right, and the way a persons face was shaped was challenging. It just made me want to do more. I've been challenging myself every single day in art because I want to do art for a living whether it's in theatre or painting a canvas, I need to challenge myself to learn the techniques. Things I'm fascinated with, are the things I challenge myself to draw.
Now there is the matter of how important the art you show is. To incorporate meaning, emotion, and symbolism. I think it's important to show in some art pieces, but not all the time. The reason being is that sometimes you just want to draw a dog, and that's it. No meaning or emotion needed. However, it is important when you're doing an art piece that is surrounding one topic. Then you need to add meaning, symbolism, and emotion because if you don't then how will it convey your artistic potential? It won't.
Lastly there is what makes good artwork. I personally believe that what makes good artwork is not only creativity, but integrity. You need to be willing to do the artwork, have it be as a fuel for you to work. If you don't then I don't think that there is really any point in doing it if you don't have the drive to do it. Creativity does play a big part in it too being that is what makes us artists art become real. That's what makes good art.
