Three Tiered Alice in Wonderland Cake
The craftsmanship of my sculpture I feel is very well executed. It's neat, the idea is clearly shown, and it's the overall sketch that I pictured in my mind. I think the most difficult part in this project was the painting, because there were points where I couldn't paint all the spots that my brushes couldn't reach which I was kind of disappointed about that, but painting the pocket watch was difficult too since I had to do the numbers and the lines trying to keep a steady hand and not shake a ton. Also when I was painting the cat under the eyebrows are still white spots that my brush couldn't reach which was annoying and hard to do. I do however love the paint job on the hat, it looks like the actual hat and I couldn't be more prouder of that. My color choices did work harmoniously because for one it's Alice and Wonderland so there has to be bright and rich colors to portray that scenery and the characters bringing them to life. The eyes on the cat I love because it's the exact color that I wanted, the blue is perfect, and the coloring on the clock too is awesome. My sculpture is definitely interesting from all values, in the color, in the structure, even in the idea. It's not exactly perfect, but you know what it is being a cake, and I kind of liked having it not be smooth and having it being a little wonky in shape because that's what Alice in Wonderland is, it's a wacky, and yet wonderful world that everyone wants to be apart of. The difference in making something 3D instead of 2D is that you can see the creation all around, you don't have to just see the front, you can see it from behind, the side, whatever you want, and you really can't do that with just a picture on a piece of paper. It also brings your creation more to life, you can hold it in your hands you can feel it and feel the texture instead of just drawing it out. I created the textures in my sculpture just by using a needle tool mostly for the designing or doing small details. Other things I used was the rolling pin to smooth out the clay for the cards, the shaping tools to create a circular shape for the pocket watch, and used mostly my hands for the rest. I feel like my clay does resemble actual food, because with a cake like this, it's mostly covered in fondant, and it looks like clay and has textures to make it look realistic, so if I were to show someone a picture of this and ask them what it was they would most likely say a Alice in Wonderland 3 tiered cake. If I could do something differently with this project I would probably make the 2nd tiered cake bigger because it looks like the same size as the 1st tiered cake which is kind of annoying, but if I could redo it then I would, I would also have more detail in the bottom, like the clock is great and the mushrooms are, but maybe something more would be even better and make it even more incredible. This project overall was one of the best projects, because I love to sculpt, I want to go into a career where you have to sculpt, and I feel like I'm making more and more creations every day that I can show people and say this is my work and I'm so proud of it.
